Nose ring seems to be sinking down in to my nose

by Tori
(United States)

I got my nose pierced 4 days ago,as of right now it's not hurting at all. But around the piercing is still a little swollen and red.The piercing place used a small screw nose ring...now the nose ring seems to be sinking down in to my nose. I'm not sure if this is because it's still a little swollen or if its really growing up around the jewelery. Ive have been cleaning it 2-3 times a day with saline solution, as directed by the piercer. So I've been pushing the nose ring up a little to clean under it and that is all. So is this normal, or is my piercing ruined? Is there anything I can do to prevent it from sinking in to my nose? I hate to have to take it out because I really like! Thanks for any advice you can give me!

How do I tell if a new nose stud is sinking in
by: Anonymous

It can depend on several factors…

How old it is? Swelling is normal in the early days of the healing process.
Any Discharge? If the gunk/crust around the piercing is pale and doesn't ooze or smell, this is normal.
What is the Colour? If the piercing site is swollen and purple-ish in colour, it could be a symptom of rejection.
What is the nose ring Position? It may be a cause for concern if the jewellery seems to hang differently (ie: it seems looser or the hole seems to have changed size or shape) and if the piercing has begun to migrate (that is, move away from its initial placement).
If in doubt, always consult a professional piercer. If your skin has just been pierced swelling may occur at your piercing as your body attempts to protect you so inflammation is a natural response. If the swelling persists after about a week, I’d consider taking a closer look at your cleaning process and possibly talking to your doctor if you notice signs of piercing infection. Going back to where you got your nose pierced and talking to your piercer (if possible that is) is also an open option for you to get a professional opinion. Make sure you watch for signs of infection and if you feel pain then it’s likely that your piercing is swollen.

If you think it’s sinking in, you likely won't feel much pain (based on my experience of having had a sinking stud after piercing my nose). If it sinks in, you can tell by how much of it comes out when you push outwards from the inside of the nose. If it is sinking I suggest you swap it out sooner rather than later. A sinking nose stud isn’t the worst thing to happen but it can cause potential problems in the future. I wasn’t able to go to my piercer to get it done, so I switched mine out at home. However, I really wouldn’t suggest doing that. For me, it was fine because I had a clean nose stud readily available to replace the other one and my parents had experience with body piercings and could help me. Instead, I suggest you go to your piercer if possible and get them to switch it out.

Please take good care of your piercing, as I’d hate for you to be left with an infection. Make sure to check up on your piercing and hopefully my response helped you a bit!

Nose stud sinking
by: Anonymous

I got my nose pierced 3 days ago. It was completely okay until today i realised the stud is flat on my nose whereas it was pointy. And now only the surface is outside the rest of the stud has sunk in the piercing. I did a bit of research and found out that it usually sinks when the nose swells up which is pretty much normal. My nose pin has a fastening screw which is tight so i cant open it at the moment. Since its sunday i cant go to the place i pierced until tomorrow.

Nose Stud disappeared
by: Anonymous

Pierced my nose on Saturday and then by sunday it was gone.Going back Wednesday which is tomorrow because the tattoo parlor is an hour away. I kept washing it as advised by piercer with saline solution. I was pushing it out from inside case the base of screw was still in..this morning I did and boom the jewelry is back on the outside of my nose but before was ony a little metal piece not the shiny diamond like.it is a super small stud so maybe with swelling it sunk but still doesn't explain t ome why it didn't shoveout before. hopefully when I go back tomorrow they can give me some anwer or a bigger stud

Lessons learned
by: Anonymous

I had that same issue the first time I had my nose pierced. It turned out to be the piercer's fault—he put a nose ring in that wasn't long enough to leave room for swelling. Because of that, when my nose did swell, the post was too short and the gem was too small, so it "sunk in." I tried and tried pushing it up and cleaning it with different solutions, but nothing helped. I took it out, let it heal completely, and went and got it repierced later. This time, I researched and found the best tattoo parlor near me. This time, the piercer put in jewelry with a longer post and a bigger gem, and I didn't have the problem at all!

Help Stop the sinking :(
by: Veronica

I got my nose pierced on Tuesday night. Tuesday, Wed. and Thursday were fine. But on friday morning the jewlry is sunken in pretty bad. I've been cleaning with sea salt. I guess now I will sleep with cotton balls soaked in sea salt, take ibprophen, ice it, and put a tissue paper in my nose to keep it above the surface. I pray it goes down fast. I don't know what else to do. Suggestions welcome.

PIERCING SINKING
by: Anonymous

I got my piercing 6 months ago, It was sinking after a week, I went to a piercer and changed it into a stud that is long enough to accomodate the swelling, otherwise the skin tries to heal arond the sinked stud. Now its healed well after getting some prescription ointments from my primary doctor. A long journey with my piercing to a happy ending.

Ugh. I'm experiencing the. saammee thing. nose screw looks as if it's sinking in
by: Anonymous

I got my nose screw 8 days ago and 3 days after getting it I noticed it seemed as if it was sinking in, no pain, or anything it just seems like it's smooth to my nose so I walk around with a little ball of tissue in it when I'm at home just to keep it pushed out. Cleaning it twice a day but when I push it out the hole looKS so big. Don't want to take it out, & it's too soon to switch it out for a hoop so what am I to doooo????
Can't walk around with a huge hole in my nose so I may take it out if the saline solution and ice don't work :(

Sinking nose stud
by: Harley

I got my nose pierced cuz I'm a Dude and I wanted it to sparkle in the eyes of all the pretty girls I was hitting on and the friggen thing started sinking into my nose and just looked like a zit! Such a piss off. Soo in turn I have spent the last couple days with balls of toilet paper shoved up m nose to hold it out from the skin and have been cleaning it twice a day with this wound cleanser stuff I was told would work. I dunno if I need a longer bar or what cuz it doesn't hurt at all it just sits flush with my skin and looks stupid to me. Should I got get new jewelry or continue my little self remedy and hope it works?

Make a mixture of warm water and Epsom or Sea Salt and apply it several times a day with a cotton ball to reduce swelling.

HELP!
by: Morgan

The same thing is happening to me! i talked to a friend and she said she got hers done at the same place i did and her nose ring also was sinking into her nose. She went back to the place that did hers and they put in a different piercing that had a bigger stud. She was still worried so she went to a different parlor and they were shocked to hear that he changed it because it's a huge risk of infection. So she ended up having to take the whole thing out and letting it heal. I have no idea what I'm going to do ):

Sunken stud
by: Anonymous

Well my nose was pierced 4 days ago and on the second day it was sinking into my nose... I was scared and freaking out. I consulted with my professional piercer and he told me to come by the shop. The sad thing is that the shop is over 30 miles from my house. So last night I got home made my salt water solution and applied a cotton ball under the stud and above... When I woke up today it looked a lot better. But I am still going to my guy so he can see what he can do to fix it. I think that this happens when the nose is swollen. So if you can try some ice and salt water that should help a little bit but make sure you go back to the place where you received the piercing. You might need a bigger stud...
