Retainer

I wear an acrylic nose retainer for my AFJROTC uniform every Wednesday, though have pain in inserting the jewelry. (I got it pierced six months ago). Is this just because my nose is used to a different material or should I consider an alternate material such as a metal flesh colored stud?
P.S. yes, I clean both the jewelry and my nose before changing it.
