Is there anyway to go back a gauge size in nose rings?

Im having a difficult time with my piercing staying put in my nose, and I am worried this is effecting the wound itself. I'd like to go back to my original gauge size, from when it first got pierced,so as to start over. But it hurts too much to get back in, do you HAVE to stretch it back out or is there an easier method to re-insertion?
