What rapper Tupac Shakur, Madonna, Mary J Blige, Christina Aguilera and Sinead O’Connor has in common? Simple, they are celebrities with nose piercing. And that is only a few names. Add names like guitarist Slash, Billie Joe Martin, Elisabeth Hurley, Fantasia, Alyssa Milano, Lenny Kravitz, Janet Jackson, Joss Stone, Pink, Scarlett Johansson, all of whom are not only celebrities with nose piercing, but body piercing as well. In case of male, note that it represents alpha male like qualities and aggression, especially for rapper like the late Tupac Shakur and Slash who represents the heavy metal genre. In case of female celebrities, it accentuates the feminine beauty.

Celebrity with nose piercing, namely the rockers and rappers often also use it, to brand themselves. Recently Axl Rose, the lead singer of Guns N Roses, in filing a suit against game makers Activision, on the use of one of its song, also complained of use of “an animated depiction of Slash, with his signature black top hat, long dark curly hair, sunglasses and nose piercing”. Yes, you can’t even miss it in your computer screen and know what it represented the band, especially during its early days.  

Nasal Septum Piercing

Sister to nose piercing would be nasal septum piercing which is less common, but popular nevertheless. The septum is the cartilage that’s situated between the nostrils, and the piercing is usually done to the tiny gap between the cartilage and the bottom of the nose.  

Lajon Witherspoon, singer from Sevendust, actress Scarlett Johansson, model Sybil Buck, rocker Hayley Williams and his band mate Taylor York have all done septum nasal septum piercing.

Love them, hate them, but one cannot argue against the contribution Paparazzi has done culturally. Spotting celebrities with nose piercing is sometimes as good as catching them off-guard in some unhealthy act for content hungry tabloids, and nose piercing can at times be headline maker.  

Most of celebrities, especially actresses, who may have not at all sported nose-rings in the films or TV shows, usually would sport nose rings or studs off camera and who else but the paparazzi through the tabloid (respectful or sleazy) have them exposed to adoring thousands (or millions).

It is well known that gold and platinum rings with diamonds or semi-precious stones are the most sought after by especially models, actresses or other celebrities. The common styles would include rings, labrets and screws that also come in titanium or surgical steel.  

Of course, the very self-aware celebrities do mix and match their makeup with suitable rings or studs, but that depends on the individual taste. Naturally, the more flamboyant the celebrities are, the flashier it becomes.  

No Longer Shock and Awe

When celebrities first started piercing their ears, it was considered shocking. Body piercing, particularly ear and nose piercing was considered of foreign culture for those in the western hemisphere. Then, single ear piercing became multiple piercing and soon, it was not surprising when nose piercing arrived. It is no longer shocking, as celebrities of varying age started sporting nose stud or rings, inspiring hoards of fans and worshippers of also similar varying age group to start doing the same.  

May it be on the concert stage, on the red carpet, on the big screen and small screen, or off the side-walk, sights of celebrities with nose piercing are common and only goes to show that nose piercing has come a long way from being some exotic cultural paraphernalia to beauty accentuating accessories that we have come to love.
